Appropriations Update

By: Patrick Kerley
Date: July 21, 2008

From Aaron Saunders –

Senator Stevens is continuing to have success in urging both Democrats and Republicans to support federal projects in Alaska. Most recently, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bunch of funding that will directly benefit Alaska.

There are some highlights:

$16 million for a Bethel National Guard Readiness Center

Funding for:
· a child development center at Fort Richardson
· F-22 infrastructure and maintenance facility development at Elmendorf
· a dental clinic upgrade at Fort Richardson

More than $10 million to the Denali Commission for energy projects.

$25 million for rural Alaska sanitation projects.

Nearly $14 million to communities with extreme unemployment and economic depression. These funds will be used for construction projects.

$50 million for the Rural Business Renewable Energy Program for the purchase of energy efficiency improvements.

Does this sound like “government waste” to you? Yeah, me neither. Just Senator Stevens working closely with Alaskans and the military to ensure their needs are met. It’s nice to see that even in an election year, Democrats and Republicans can together support these important projects.

By: Patrick Kerley
Date: July 10, 2008

Congress is beginning its work on this year’s appropriations bills. Senator Stevens, reacting to requests from around the state, has been able to secure funding for a number of Alaska projects.

Here are some highlights of what has been passed out of committee so far:

$125 million for the Essential Air Service (nationally), a program that guarantees air service to 39 Alaska communities that would otherwise not get the regular commercial service.

$5 million for airport safety projects – $2.5 million for runway lighting on rural runways and the other half for the Medallion Program.

$21.8 million for the Denali Commission to continue their mission funding various public infrastructure projects.

$4.5 million to aid communities under threat from coastal erosion.

$45 million for projects throughout Alaska under the supervision of the Army Corps of Engineers. Many of these projects involve work on harbors throughout the state including Haines, Valdez, Anchorage, and Homer.

$3.5 million to explore alternative energy projects.

$8.3 million for the Community Development Financial Institutions to continue grants, loans, technical support, and training programs that benefit Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities.
