During one of his visits to AFN about 6 or so years ago, Senator Stevens talked to Native Leaders about their need to increase accountability for earmarks he’s been getting for villages. He stated that we need to be more proactive in using the funds he’s gotten for communities and show that the money is being used for what is was meant to be used for – housing, water/sewer, etc. His words inspired…

When I was twelve years old, in the 7th grade, and living in Fairbanks, I was assigned to write an essay on any political candidate in the news at the time. I chose Senator Stevens as my subject. I went to a rally for Senator Stevens held at AlaskaLand and afterwards, approached Senator Stevens with a question or two for my paper. I do not have a heartfelt story about Senator Stevens, but this simply shows that no matter how big or small your status was, he was willing to help. My family has lived in Alaska since 1978.
