During one of his visits to AFN about 6 or so years ago, Senator Stevens talked to Native Leaders about their need to increase accountability for earmarks he’s been getting for villages. He stated that we need to be more proactive in using the funds he’s gotten for communities and show that the money is being used for what is was meant to be used for – housing, water/sewer, etc. His words inspired…

Ted did a lot of good work for the Alaska Native Corporations and their ability to get government cotracts. There are tens of thousands of people around the U.S. and in different countries that are working in good paying jobs for Alaska Native Corporations. On Election Day, we all should vote for Ted.

When I was twelve years old, in the 7th grade, and living in Fairbanks, I was assigned to write an essay on any political candidate in the news at the time. I chose Senator Stevens as my subject. I went to a rally for Senator Stevens held at AlaskaLand and afterwards, approached Senator Stevens with a question or two for my paper. He treated my questions as seriously as if they were to be…

I do not have a heartfelt story about Senator Stevens, but this simply shows that no matter how big or small your status was, he was willing to help. My family has lived in Alaska since 1978. I have grown up listening to Senator Stevens and watching him fight for our state for a very long time. Recently, when my sister was overseas, and she had been deployed to Japan, she had a terrible…

I hope Senator Stevens wins this election. I am an Alaska Native and a leader and a Democrat. I was going to vote for your rival, but the Outsiders back them and that changed my mind pretty quickly. The Outsiders are anti this, anti that. Thanks for all the things you done for rural Alaska.

My family relies on the Alaska Native Medical Center for our health care. Thanks to Senator Stevens, we have a state-of-the-art, gorgeous facility that more than exceeds our needs. I have on occasion used health care services outside our system and the difference is HUGE. Senator Stevens has lived up to his commitment to Alaska Native people in a very real and personal way.
I was able to meet the Senator in person this year. I have supported him as far back as 1974, the time I have been in Fairbanks. As I listened to his speech, I found that he is a smart man who recalls historic facts with great precision. He is a very personable man, a friend of us all with a great mind for the state of Alaska. When you meet him you will love…

I remember well when Senator Steven’s wife Ann died in an airplane crash here in Anchorage in 1978. It was shear luck that the Senator survived. But with that I began to remember when Ted visited Barrow. I was 12 when I first met Ted, and somehow or another he had heard of a carver that carved ivory figurines with uncanny ability. I was angry because I wouldn’t get my dollar in commission, for…

For many years Senator Stevens have helped the Native Community with federal funding for projects that had no hope. One story in particular, when the storm surges were getting worse in Kivalina and ocean erosion increased in time. I was an intern in Senator Stevens’ office and I knew he was who I needed to turn to. I had no one to turn to make a difference. Senator Stevens responded and came the same summer…

Many years ago I had a problem with the Internal Revenue Service. I worked hard to get them paid off, interest and penalty, but still they garnished mine and my wife’s Alaska Permanent Fund checks. I wrote to Senator Ted Stevens, and within a few days I got a letter of apology from the head of the Internal Revenue Service and within a few days after that we got our Permanent Fund checks.

There are so many ways Senator Stevens has help every Alaskan and visitors lives while in our state that no one knows. Let me share just one way he has touched so many lives all over the state. Ten years ago Alaska was facing a collapse in one of Alaskans basic public services. One that put many lives in danger and it was a well-kept secret but those on the front line would find ways…

Senator Stevens took on an IRS issue on my behalf. I had made an error on my taxes and filed an amended return. I ended up owing a little over $300. I paid this promptly, but for some reason it was not showing with the IRS. They (the IRS) garnished my first PFD for the amount. All the materials were provided to the VA and we still could not get the VA approval. I finally contacted Ted’s office and within days it was a done deal.
